Gyros
Ingredients:
-ground lamb
-oregano
-spices
-onion
-garlic
-pita bread
-tzatziki sauce
-tomato
Gyros are a traditional Greek food, prepared by cooking ground lamb, and cutting it into very think slices. It is then served in a pita, with onion, tomato, garlic, oregano, spices, and tzatziki sauce, another traditional Greek food.
While the gyro itself originated in Greece, it was derived from doner kabobs from the Middle East. These contained turkey or shawarma, and the meat was thinly sliced, rather than being ground up. Lamb is used, however, because it is one of the most commonly eaten meats in Greece. On Easter, in particular, it is traditional for Greek people to roast a whole lamb. Greece is a country with long lasting religious traditions, and eating lamb is something that has been done for a very long time in the country. In Greece, these sandwich-like dishes are made individually, with the ingredients found in Greece. However, since the 1970s, gyros have become very popular in the United States. Because of this, here they have began to be mass produced. They are served in Greek restaurants all over the country as a result of cultural diffusion, and are being produced more quickly than ever in order to serve more people in an efficient way.
